* VIDEO * Surfing, Sombrio and Summer weather.
What a way to spend an uncharacteristically warm September afternoon!
With a warm breeze and bright sun, we set out from Sooke towards Port Renfrew—destination Sombrio Beach.
We decided to stop in Jordan River, about half way between Sooke and Sombrio Beach, to stretch our legs and check out the busy coastline. The sprawling surf was speckled with surfers. We watched for a while and walked the shoreline before continuing on our journey.
Like Jordan River, Sombrio Beach is a surfing hotspot; a first-rate locale to ride the waves on Southern Vancouver Island, even in the winter months. Sombrio Beach also offers excellent beach-side camping in designated spots at East Sombrio and West Sombrio. Click here to learn more about Sombrio Beach surfing and camping.
From beginning to end it was a great day. We even saw several Grey whales at Jordon River and at Sombrio Beach. Spectacular sights!
Spotting whales of any kind from the shorelines is not a rare occurrence, but it’s always thrilling. You simply need to know what to look for. A highly visible identifier of a whale’s presence is the plume of water vapour sprayed from their blowhole. This can be seen from many miles away. Also, you may see a flash of a black tale or dorsal fin as other common signs that they’re close by. French Beach, China Beach, Mystic Beach and Botanical Beach also offer excellent sea-life viewing opportunities.
Whether your activity of choice is surfing, camping, beachcombing, photography, hiking, wildlife viewing, or just lazing on the sandy beach, Sombrio Beach is a west coast scene that has it all. Check out our video to catch a glimpse.

HI
How can I tell if a particular day is a good one for surfing at Sombrio Beach. ON some days the water is pretty flat, but on other days the waves are great.
Thanks.
