Great Coho Fishing in Sooke, BC
Aug.26th Fished with Alice and Sam from California, from the Bluffs to Otter Point. Lots of small “shaker” Springs. Landed 3 small Springs, 1 hatchery Coho and 4 Pink Salmon . Saw 2 large Sea Lions feeding off of Otter Point and went to check it out, it was a school of Coho, we must have played 6-7 of them to the boat, all but one were wild. Who says you can’t fish on your honeymoon.
Aug.27th Fished with Rod and son Eric from Washington State, out front in the Harbour mouth. Rod landed a small 8lb Spring in the early morning. Later we went out for smoking fish (Pinks), and landed 5. Water was flat in the morning but chopped up over the noon hours, calmed in the afetrnoon, no big Springs.
Aug 28th Regular guests David and Jake were out fishing Otter Point with 2Reel in the choppy water, David landed a 33lb Spring off third rock around 10am on a green glow with scales behind a Silver Betsy flasher. Landed another smaller Spring on a small pink hootchy on the troll in, large 3 to 4 foot waves and high winds forced us to troll back to the harbour mouth. Saw many boats hook into Springs early morning at Otter Point.
Aug.29th Fished with Brett ,Mel, and Miko from Pacific Bit in Langley B.C. at Otter Point. Landed 4 Pink Salmon, only saw 3 or 4 Springs caught, lots of boats in the area.
Aug.30th Fished with Brett and his wife Mel, at Otter Point, hit one Spring as soon as we dropped the gear, which got away from Brett. It hit on the Super Betsy flasher infront of a Purple Haze anchovey teaser head. We turned around and went over the same area, saw another boat get a fish on, and we hooked up another. Brett landed a nice 17lb Spring Salmon . We played 3 nice 9 to 12lb wild Coho to the boat for release in the same area, and landed 9 Pinks when we trolled into deeper water off Otter Point.
Aug.31st Fished with John and Maureen on a morning half day trip. Landed 3 Spring Salmon on the East side of Otter Point, 6, 10, and 14lbs, lost one good one. Landed our limit of Pink Salmon trolling straight out from Otter Point.
Sept.1st Fished with Kaelin and Steve, out front of Sooke Harbour in a stiff wind in the afternoon. Landed 2 Pink Salmon, rough water kept us from fishing near Possession Point.
Sept.3rd Fished with father and Son team Gordon and Raymond at Otter Point. We lost a good Spring Salmon at the back of the boat early morning, as soon as we dropped the gear. Raymond hooked into another good Spring at third rock that weighed in at 26lbs. Nice flat water, trolled out off the point to get the guys the limit on Pink Salmon.
Sept 4th Fished the Vancouver Island Salmon Classic sponsored by the Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina. Team 2Reel aboard the “Emily D” landed 1 Spring about 13lbs, no contending Springs.The standings were; N-Joy boat in 1st place with a 37.8lb Spring,Trevor Zbowski 2nd place 37.2lb Spring,and Dave Kennedy 3rd place with a 33.4lb Spring Salmon.
Sept 5th Fished the Salmon Classic Derby day 2. No big Springs caught on the “Emily D”. We were present at 6:30am near the white house off the Sooke Bluffs to watch Dave Cowell aboard the N-Joy boat play and land the winning $100,000, 40.6lb Spring Salmon. Good job Dave. The final standings were; N-Joy boat with 1st and 2nd place Salmon 40.6lbs, and 37.8lbs (worth $150,000 in prize money) and Trevor Zbowski in 3rd place with a 37.lb Spring ($25,000). We did catch some Pinks and a small Spring Salmon with were processed for the 2Reel team members to take back to the mainland.
Sept.6th Fished with James,Jim,Shawn and Al, didn’t find any Springs at the Bluffs or Possession Point in the morning. Trolled out to the tide lines and limited out on Pink Salmon , fished at 75ft on the downrigger with small Pink squirts.
Sept.7th Fished with Joel and Dave from the Harbour mouth to Otter Point in the morning, didn’t see any Spring Salmon. Trolled out to the middle of the straight and hit alot of Pink Salmon , then large Coho Salmon as we trolled even farther out. We released 4 wild Coho between 8 and 15lbs, didn’t get any hatchery Coho. The boys were happy with the limit on Pinks and a small Spring Salmon.
Sept.10th Fished with Shawn,Richard,Trevor and Ed from the mainland. Trolled Possession Point and continued westward to Otter Point, trolled up a small 6lb Spring Salmon on the way. Shawn hit a nice 26lb Spring at Otter Point trolling a Purple Haze anchovey teaser head behind a Silver Betsy flasher at 70ft on the downrigger. Trolled out to the tide lines around noon and picked up 5 Pink Salmon . Released 6 big wild Coho, no hatcheries. Trolled up another Spring, 9lbs on the pink squirts, on the way back to Otter Point.Great day,calm water, light winds.
Sept.11th Fished with the same crew as above, at Otter Point. Rich landed a nice 13lb Spring Salmon off the point. We landed 1 Pink Salmon as well. Stayed in tight (shallow) looking for big Springs. Wind was out of the South East, became very choppy later in the day.
Sept.12th Fished with Ian and Jay, who had never Salmon fished before, they landed 5 salmon out in the shipping lanes. 2 Hatchery Coho,2 Pink Salmon and 1 small Spring Salmon. We released many small Springs, 2 small Halibut, and 2 wild Coho. Flat water and sunny skies, good day.
Sept.13th Fished with regular guest Shawn and his friend Neil. Trolled out from the reef at Secretary Island south to the Shipping lanes. Landed 4 nice hatchery Coho; 5,8,8,and 11lbs. Best combo seemed to be a red flasher with a glow or pink hootchy.
