Salmon Fishing in Sooke, BC has slowed.

Salmon Fishing in Sooke has slowed down for big Spring Salmon over the last week, especially in the mornings.

With the fast approaching Vancouver Island Salmon Classic Derby, some teams are already planning, and practice fishing as teams in preparation for this high stakes event. Rules and information on the Derby can be found on the website.

Tides should improve the fishing in the mornings for the Derby. Most of the local hot spots are producing one or two chances in a morning or afternoon if you are in the right place at the right time.

“Out front”, the Harbour mouth, Possession Point, the Bluffs and Secretary Island have been popular places to look for that elusive big Spring Salmon, as this is the time of year they usually school up there. Otter Point has been GOOD in the late afternoon if the wind stays down. Lately the afternoons have been better, but the weather is unpredictable, often the wind comes up. Good lures have been the Glow Below hootchy, the green, red and chrome, purple Haze, and chartruese Rhys Davies and Krippled K teaser heads. Pink and Coho Salmon fishing has been GOOD as both fish have become larger on average, and can be easily located by fishing out from Secretary Is. or Otter Point geared with little pink squirts or hootchies, tied on short leaders.

The last few days the Pinks have been in tight to shore at Possession Point, so you can fish both Springs and Pinks. If the Pinks and Coho are not there, troll due south until you find them, they maybe up to three or four miles out. Troll out until you have half of the Salmon you want, then troll back towards shore to get the rest and get on with hunting for big Springs.

Aug 20th Afternoon Fished with Chis and Bob in the Harbour Mouth. Lost a large Spring which came to the surface and splashed around, on the first or second pass, mid afternoon. Water was very choppy, but we managed to land three decent smaller Springs and one Pink Salmon.

Aug 21st Afternoon Fished with regular guests, Scott and his Son Liegh at Possession Point, landed some Pinks and a nice hatchery Coho. Had a couple of Springs hook up, but did not get them to the boat.

Aug 22nd Fishing with Scott and Liegh at Possession in the morning and Otter Point in the afternoon. Hooked into four Springs at Otter late in the Afternoon, the first and largest was on the Glow Below hootchy behind a red flasher at 57ft on the downrigger. Didn’t land any of the big Salmon, did land more Pinks for smoking and a nice hatchery Coho Salmon.

Aug 23rd Liegh and Scott fished the Bluffs on 2REEL early morning and Liegh got to play a nice 16lb Spring into the net, his biggest to date. He also played a huge wild Coho to the side of the boat, which we had to release. Landed more Pinks for St.Jeans Cannery to make into Scott’s favorite Peppercorn Indian Candy.Flat water, sunny morning.

Aug 23rd Afternoon Fished with Donavan, his Dad Scott, Duane and Wally, in the Harbour mouth, on this choppy windy afternoon. Saw one or two other Springs caught, Duane landed a good 16lb Spring close to Possession Point. Also landed 5 Pink Salmon in close while we were looking for Springs, and one Rock Cod.

Aug 24th Fished with Jason and Jack from Alberta, at the Bluffs and Harbour Mouth, slow morning, didn’t see any Springs caught. Fished for Pinks out from the Bluffs and took 7 of them. Went back in for Springs and Jason hooked into a nice 18lb fighter that took some line and went deep on us. We were fishing a Purple Haze teaser head behind a Silver Betsy flasher at 74ft on the downrigger in 100ft of water, just west of Possession Point.

Good Fishing, Ron
