Fishing in July has been great in Sooke, BC

July 1st Fished with Leyla and Ed from East Sooke. Ran up to Jordan River and anchored for Halibut. Lots of dog fish later, we landed a small Halibut. Sunny hot weather, but the wind came out of the east for a bumpy ride back.

2REEL2 Bob fished with Carol,Gean,Connor and Pat, Connor landed a 15lb Spring Salmon at Sherringham Pt. and two Hatchery Coho.

July2nd 2REEL2 skipper Bob fished with Carol, Jake, Pat, and Bill from Otter Point to Sherringham Point. Slow day for Springs, landed two Hatchery Coho Salmon.

July 3rd 2REEL2 Bob fished a half day with Patrick and Karen. Fished from Otter to Sherringham Point. Lost one nice Coho 7 or 8lbs. Lots of crabs in the traps.

July 4th Fishing with Peter Sienfeld in the afternoon at Possession Point. Peter landed a good 25lb Spring Salmon on a purple haze Rhys Davis head trolled behind a red Oki flasher at 57ft on the downrigger, right off the point at 9pm.

July 5th Fishing with Mike,Mark,Tim and Murray at Otter Point. Released many small Spring Salmon,kept one 5lb Spring for the BBQ. Didn’t see many big Springs caught, slower day.

July 6th Fishing with Doug,Brenda,Alex and Scott from Alberta. Fished the afternoon at Otter Point, strong flooding tide and strong wind, small waves. Doug landed a nice 21.5lb Spring trolled up from 85ft, on a green frog pattern Kripple Anchovey head behind a silver Betsy flasher. Orca whales showed up and formed a line of about 12 whales which swam from the point to third rock and back again. Doug landed another small Spring for the BBQ after that.

July 7th Fished Otter Point and further west today, many small Spring Salmon released. Fished with John and Keran from England. Keran had one good Spring on the line that spat the hook out. He did land a nice 5lb hatchery Coho . Slower day up west, saw one good size Spring caught on another boat.

July 8th Fishing with Mike from New Zealand at the Trap Shack in the morning. Bite came on around 11am from the Trap to Beechy Head, first shook off a small Spring then Mike landed one 14.5lbs and another smaller one for the BBQ. Saw about a dozen fish caught on other boats in the area. There were lots of seagulls feeding on krill, and baitfish schooling everywhere. Saw another Halibut caught on Salmon gear that came from the Gordon’s beach area on the dock.

2REEL2 Bob was fishing with Dave and Mike from North Van at the Trap Shack. Dave played and landed a nice 30lb Spring from out in the first tide line, maybe a mile off shore. They also released one wild Coho and two smaller Spring Salmon.

July 9th Fishing with Richard and his two daughters Sahra and Jenny at the trap shack. Short bite on first thing in the morning, saw a couple of Spring Salmon caught. Saw a few more big Springs caught at noon, Sarah played and landed a 25lb Spring at 85ft on the downrigger off Obrien Point. Jenny landed a 10lb Spring on the next pass. Jenny also pulled in an impressive 3.5lb Rock Cod off the reef at the Trap. We also had plenty of crabs in the traps on our return to Sooke Harbour. Flat water and warm temperatures, great day.

July 10th Fishing with David and Jesse Armstrong from Alberta, started at Otter Point and trolled west. David grabbed the rod on an 11lb Spring trolled up at 65ft on the downrigger in 80ft of water, using the red Oki flasher and tiger prawn Rhys Davis anchovey teaser head. Played lots of small Springs to the boat that we released. Trolled up to Sherringham, saw one fish caught around noon.

July 11th Fishing with John,Magid,and Eddy, we started at Otter and trolled west, found Orca whales fishing the area first thing. Turned the boat south and fished the deeper water finding that the Pink and Coho Salmon have arrived in decent numbers. The guys landed two Pinks , one hatchery Coho,and a small Spring, releasing two very nice wild Coho Salmon, and a few small Springs. Eddy had the feeling of playing a big Spring for a few minutes, after we returned to the area around noon. Foggy morning clearing by noon, with a cool wind. A couple of crabs waited for the boys on the way in.

July 12th Fished with Dominic and Anneka from Hong Kong. We started at Otter Point and stayed there due to weather conditions. Saw one big Spring hooked into on another boat, didn’t see if they landed it. Dominic and Anneka played and landed two hatchery Coho,two Pinks and one 8lb Spring Salmon. Released three wild Coho and a few small Springs as well. The couple must have played 12 to 15 fish to the boat. Weather was windy and choppy, fishable.
