June 1, 2009 – Excellent Fishing in the Sooke area.
May 29th Fishing with the Defillipi crew: Judy,Gigi,Brad and Rick, staying at the Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina. We started out fishing at Possession Point and received some good info that the bite was on at Otter Point about half way through the trip. We pulled the gear and ran to Otter where Rick got to play a 22lb scappy Spring Salmon in a slight chop and some fresh wind.
The fish hit a purple haze anchovey teaser head trolled behind a silver betsy flasher at 70ft on the downrigger, keeping the sounder at 110 to 120ft of water.
Good day, turned unfishable by the afternoon, we were riding some big waves on the way home. Good crabs in the traps, on the way in, the ladies made up some incredible crab cakes at the condo.
May 30th Same crew as yesterday, we started fishing at Otter Point this time in partly foggy conditions, and Gigi grabbed the rod on a bite in 150ft of water, having never used the west coast style gear she had a great time landing 2Reel’s first 30lb Spring of the season, congradulations Gigi Balkan.
The crew opted to stay out for the full day and Brad had a very good fish off third rock at Otter Point that managed to get off the gear, we didn’t see the fish, but it was large. Flat water, foggy until noon, then hot and sunny.
2REEL2 Bob fished with Don and Mike who were staying at Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina. They picked a 23lb Spring in the deep water off third rock at Otter Point early morning.
May31st Fishing with Larry and Lynne staying at Salty Towers B&B, we tried an afternoon trip at Otter Point. After a lot of trolling we made Lynne a believer after she played a 21lb Spring Salmon into the net. The white glow Rhys Davies anchovey teaser head trolled behind an Oki red stripe flasher was the combo that worked trolled at 95ft in the flooding tide off the reef, this time. Flat water, sunny skies, some chop with tidal movement brought the fish on at around 6:30pm. We also spotted a large Orca whale with two smaller ones passing meters from our boat.
2REEL2 Bob was fishing with Mike and Don again, and picked up another 23lb Spring Salmon off the Sooke Bluffs this time. They also had a Halibut grab the Salmon gear, that didn’t make it into the boat unfortunatly. They also picked up a smaller Spring Salmon.
Good Fishing, Ron
