May 26, 2009 – Great Fishing in Sooke.
May 19th Fished the Trap Shack with Mario and Frank, driving down from Duncan we had a later start at 10:00 am. There was another boat in the area when we got there, “High Noon” had a reported 30lb Spring on board. We had on big strike that didn’t hook up around noon fishing around 100ft. No other bites. Wind blew up in the afternoon, bumpy ride back. We did get some good crabs, in the harbour on the way in.
May 22nd Fishing with Lyonel and Jim from Australia, we trolled anchovey at the Trap Shack. The morning was slow, saw two or three fish get on other boats, but only saw one landed. Jim hooked into a big Spring that spat the hook close to the back of the boat just after noon, the fish looked mid 20’s. We had two other bites that didn’t hook up. Had strikes on Purple Haze and plain glow anchovey teaser heads trolled at 100 and 110ft on the downrigger.
May 24th Fishing with Jos,Ivo and Jorrit from Holland, we started in the Trap Shack, and saw one boat catch a nice Spring at 55ft on the downrigger, on an anchovey with no flasher. We did see a couple more fish caught between Secretary Is. and Possession Point, we had no strike at all. Water was flat in the morning and the wind blew up around noon. We did pull three nice crabs out of the traps back at the harbour
May 25th Fishing with the same crew as yesterday, we started in the area between Secretary Is. and Possession Point and worked it trolling at 60 and 70ft on the Downrigger. We were using a purple haze anchovey teaser head trolled behind a silver betsy flasher and a glow head trolled behind a mirror red flasher. First strike of the morning didn’t hook up, the second one did and Jos lost the fish to a hungry seal. Then Jorrit hooked into a nice 24.5lb Spring Salmon infront of Possession, and did a great job of landing it in choppy water. Water had a small chop from early on, with lots of tidal movement.
Good Fishing, Ron
