*VIDEO* CCGA-P Unit #37 Sooke and Safe Boating week.

While our boat, the Spirit of Sooke is getting some maintenance work done, we were advised to take the Mark VII RHIB from Victoria back to Sooke in case we had any SAR call outs, so we wouldn’t be stood down and can help anyone in need of assistance.

Two of us made the journey around Race Rocks and into the Sooke Harbour.

With safe boating week currently happening, I thought this video would be a good reminder for everyone to boat safely and to make sure your vessel is equiped with all the necessary items needed to ensure a safe journey out on the water.

Please take the time to grab a free copy of the Safe Boating Guide located around various places in Sooke and to make sure you have all the right equipment on-board your boat. Do you have enough PFD’s on board? Is your VHF radio working? Do you have the proper flares and amounts and are you sure they haven’t expired. Do you have oars and a bailing bucket? These are just a few things you should make sure you have before you head out. Prepare for the unexpected.

Out on the waters around Sooke, it only takes a split second for the weather to change and you need to make sure you and your passengers are well protected against anything that might happen.

It’s a great week to do this as the boating season is starting to ramp up and we are starting to see many more people out on the water enjoying the nice weather. We’ve had 4 pages out to assist in the last 2 weeks, so we are preparing for another busy summer and this weekend is the annual Driftsure Yacht Race, normally a busy time for us.

I hope you enjoy the video and remember to boat safe!
