May 20, 2009 – Great fishing in Sooke!

Great fishing in Sooke for Spring salmon of all sizes, there are 6 to 39 lb Springs being caught in Sooke now.

This last weekend showed some nice Springs wieghed in at Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina and Eagle Eye Outfitters including an awesome 39lb hatchery Spring Salmon, caught by Cal Young and crew. It was taken at the Trap Shack, on the 13th of May. Good fishing Cal.

The bite for Salmon has been early, for best results be on your spot at dawn. All the Sooke hot spots have producing some large Springs, but not many fish, including Possession Point and the Trap Shack. Some boats of coarse are still coming up empty, but still much better than last year at this time. Crabbing is excellent in the Harbour, our traps have been near full, with up to have a dozen keeper sized crabs in each trap. Those fishing Halibut have been doing well, with most fish being in the 15 to 40lb range. There was a huge Halibut that came into Eagle Eye Outfitters on May 18th, Neil Mallory and his crew; Heather Macklin,Myles Burnett and Emmanuel Bedard all helped land this 193lb Hali on the ”Bit of Luck” boat. Congradulations guys.

May 3rd Fishing with same crew as yesterday, we had one big strike and run at Sherringham Point, the leader broke. No more action this morning. Flat water, sunny and warm.
2REEL2 Bob was fishing with same crew as yesterday, in the Sherringham Point area and landed three Spring Salmon.

May 9th Fishing with Sharon,Chad,Tom and Spencer, ran up to Sherringham Point, slower fishing, trolled east and found action was good around noon. Sharon landed one nice Spring 7.5lbs, had a few other hits and fish get on the gear, but nothing else to the boat. Glow anchovey head trolled behind a red flasher worked well at 105 to 115ft.
2REEL2 Bob was fishing with Tom,Frank, John, and John in the Sherringham area but did not hook up this morning.

May 10th Fishing with the same crew as yesterday, Sherringham was slow again, and we trolled east, found the bite was on between 10:30am and 1:00pm. We had 4 or 5 fish get on the gear, but could not get them to the boat. Good day for action but could not land them. We were using the glow white and purple haze anchovey teaser heads.

2REEL2 Bob had the same crew as yesterday and hooked into a few fish as well, they landed a nice 15lb and 5lb Springs also fishing east of Sherringham Point.

May 16th Fishing with Lay, Joe, Ben, and Michelle from Vancouver, we headed for the area between Otter and Sherringham Point, and landed two Springs 7 and 9lbs . We pulled three nice crabs out of the traps. Great flat water and sunny skies. Purple Haze teaser heads were working with Betsy chrome or red chrome flashers. The gear was trolled in 100-120ft of water at 85 to 120ft on the downrigger. Great day.

2REEL2 Bob and his crew from the mainland: Mark, Luke, Nelson, and Matt fished further up the coast at Sherringham. They landed two smaller Springs 5 and 7lbs, and pulled good numbers of crab out of the traps.

May 17th Fished again with my crew from Vancouver on 2Reel west of Otter Point. Hooked into a nice 15lb Spring early that Joe (Dad) played into the net. Later he also landed a 7lb Salmon in the same area. We were trolling Purple Haze anchovey teaser heads behind chrome Betsy flashers at 95 to 115ft on the downrigger. Some wind and chop, but very fishable. Ben also played a small Halibut to the boat on Salmon gear to add to the days catch.

2REEL2 Bob was fishing with the same mainland crew as yesterday, and tried the same area as 2REEL in the early morning, and further east later. No Salmon hits to report. They did try some bottom fishing later in the day and did land a huge rock fish 11lbs, and one other smaller rock fish. Crabbing was very good, with every trap having 3 or 4 hard keepers.

Good Fishing, Ron
