Whale Watching Excursion

Suited up and safely seated, we set out from Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina (in Sooke, BC on Vancouver Island) in the high-speed Zodiac for an exciting afternoon of whale watching in the Juan de Fuca Strait.

The sun was warm and bright, and the gentle swell made for perfect boating conditions. Our Sooke Coastal Explorations tour-guide and captain, Russ Nicks, took us out towards Whirl Bay, just off Race Rocks, where a small group of transient killer whales were hanging out. Altogether, there were about 5 or 6 orcas, including a young calf – it was amazing to watch these graceful creatures. The current was becoming stronger and the orcas were on the move, exhibiting classic hunting behaviour. We slowly manoeuvred the boat to follow along the orcas’ trajectory. We watched the killer whales for a while longer, took advantage of some fantastic photo opportunities, and then circled back to Race Rocks where we viewed dozens of Elephant Seals, Harbour Seals, and Steller and California Sea Lions lounging on the rocks, soaking up the sun. Watching these impressive marine animals in their natural habitat is unlike anything you’ve ever seen! What an amazing way to spend an afternoon. Click here to check out the amazing video.
