April 14, 2009 – Sooke Area Fishing Report

April 7th Fishing with Chris and his father Larry at the Trap Shack, trolling anchovey in 130 to 140ft of water and deeper, with the gear at 105ft to 120ft, using anchovey in green glow patterns, water was flat and clear sunny skies. We had two bites that didn’t hook up and three that did. Larry played a large wild Spring to the boat that we had to release, and Chris missed two other Salmon that spat the hooks. We did take a cod and crab for dinner. Great day for action, two other boats in the area were also getting strikes and landed some hatchery fish they could take, one was reported a whopping 20lbs.

April 11th Fishing with Calista,Kelly,Justin and Ken, 7am start, fished the Trap Shack and hit two Springs soon after dropping the gear in flat calm water. First fish got away from Kelly but Calista landed a hatchery Spring in the 11lb range soon after. We were trolling green glow heads behind red and silver Betsy flashers at 110 and 120ft on the downrigger. We had three other fish get on the gear that didn’t make it to the boat, one of them was probably high teens.Flat water, some sunny periods, 4 crabs in the traps.

April 12th Fishing with the same crew as above, didn’t get into the Trap Shack until late, 10am, but Kelly hooked into a beautiful 16lb wild Spring that she released. Saw another boat that took two hatchery Springs, and two others reported no action, appeared to be a slower morning. Lots of rain, over cast, slight breeze, but calm water. Six nice crabs in the traps.
