March 17, 2009 – Fishing in Sooke has become better for Winter Springs.

Fishing in Sooke has become better for Winter Springs.

Some boats have been reporting no strikes at all, but others are getting strikes and landing some Good winter Springs. It appears the fish are moving around, being there one day and not the next.

Ted Dawes from Reef Raider 2 has reported hitting good Springs over the last couple weeks, once on the East side of Otter Point, and on another trip at the Trap Shack. His Spring Salmon were in the 9 to 12lb range. Dave Fields and Rick Smith out of Beecher Bay, reported limiting out fishing Salmon last week from Church Rock to Trap Shack, getting most action at the Trap, trolling deep. Most trollers are reporting good catches on anchovey trolled in a variety of teaser heads.

March 13th Fishing with regular guests Dennis and his daughter Robin and boyfriend Brent. Fished from the Harbour mouth to west of Otter Point and back again with no strikes. Fishing bait on both rods. Calm sunny day, no action.
March 16th Fishing with Charlie, his Son-in-law Bernie, and Grandaughter Amy, we started trolling at the Trap Shack. Amy played one fish for a short while before it got away. She was trolling an anchovey at 110ft on the downrigger in a glow green frog pattern Oki head, behind a silver Betsy flasher. After trolling back to the Sooke Harbour mouth we had a double header, lost one, and Bernie landed one about 9lbs. Amy played and landed another one around 11lbs on a Tiger Prawn chrome Rhys Davis anchovey teaser head. Had two other strikes that didn’t hook up.

It was choppy to start, no wind, sun came out and the water went flat, nice day, good action.

Good Fishing, Ron
