Feb. 20, 2009 – Fishing in Sooke has become Spotty for Winter Springs.
There have been some great catches, including a 29lb Spring Salmon off Possession Point this last week, but many boats have been reporting no strikes at all. It appears the fish have moved, and there have been a couple of reports from Eagle-Eye Outfitters customers, that the Trap Shack is holding some nice Spring Salmon. We fished the area and did have some great action.
Dave Yakimovich reported catching a 12lb Spring late afternoon on Feb.17th on the inside of Secretary Is.
Feb.16th Fishing with Nick from Eagle-Eye Outfitters, trolling the Trap Shack area had three large strikes on glow hootchies. Nick landed a nice 13lb Spring Salmon, each of us lost one. We were fishing the normal summer time routes over the reef and towards Beechy Head, with the gear at 105 and 115ft on the downrigger. Nick had the best action on a green flasher and glow hootchy.
Feb.18th Fishing with Loise and Steve from Cornwall England, we started trolling at the Trap Shack. We had no stikes, trolled back to the Harbour mouth after a few hours, no strikes there either. Four or five boats in the area, heard of one Salmon caught on Vince Smith’s boat about 5lbs. Calm and warm in the morning, cool east wind came up at noon.
Feb.19th Fishing with Dale from Calgary, we got out around 8:15am and had a decent Spring on, within the first half hour. We were at the Harbour mouth in 140ft of water with the gear at 130ft, using anchovey in a glow green frog pattern teaser head. Dale landed a nice 6lb Salmon. He also pulled in a good Green Ling Cod that I explained were nice cubed, wrapped in bacon, and pan fried before eating your Salmon dinner. Water was flat calm until the wind came up around noon, out of the east. Two other boats in the area, no other Salmon reported caught.
Good Fishing, Ron
