Feb. 7, 2009 – Fishing in Sooke has become Spotty for Winter Springs.
Fishing in Sooke has become Spotty for Winter Springs, over the last few days. Customers at Eagle Eye Outfitters have reported landing Spring Salmon up to 16lbs, during the last week, but most have been anywhere from 5 to 8lbs. Most boats are finding fish infront of the Bluffs, harbour mouth or off Secretary Island.
It appears the fish have moved, and will return soon. Crabing in the Harbour has been great pulling 5 keepers in one trap today.
Popular lures for catching these winter Spring Salmon range; gold and nickle, Blue Haze, gold with betsy tape spoons have been working. Glow hootchies in many different varieties including; Peanut Butter,Tiger Prawn, plain glow ,Angelo’s Blood and Bone, Ghost Shrimp. Blue haze and Purple Haze hootchies are also pulling these tasty winter run Salmon out.
More trollers are also using herring and anchovey, when the fishing gets spotty, some with good results.
Feb.7th Morning Fishing with Robin,Dennis, and Bob today, we trolled from the Harbour mouth to past Otter Point. The gear did not get touched. There were probably a dozen other boats on the water, we heard of two fish being landed. Sunny calm day, slight breeze out of the east. Crabs in the Harbour.
Feb.7th Afternoon Fishing with Jessica, David and their Dad Darrel, we tried a short trip, as the water was very calm, and there was still some good sun. The kids had fun watching the rods as we trolled the Bluffs to the Trailer Park again with no strikes.
Good crabs in the Harbour.
Good Fishing, Ron
