Jan.29, 2006 – Sooke Fishing Report.
Fishing in Sooke has been VERY GOOD for large Winter Springs, over the last few weeks.
Customers at Eagle Eye Outfitters have reported landing Spring Salmon up to 20lbs, most have been anywhere from 5 to 12 or 15lbs though. Ryan Chamberlain in the Black Pearl landed a 16lb Spring last weekend in front of the harbour mouth. Most boats are finding fish infront of the Bluffs, harbour mouth or off Secretary Island.
Seals are still frequenting these areas and the only option I have found to work is to power up and move away from them. Popular lures for catching these winter Spring Salmon range; gold and nickle, Blue Haze, gold with betsy tape spoons have been working. Glow hootchies in many different varieties including; Peanut Butter,Tiger Prawn, plain glow ,Angelo’s Blood and Bone, Ghost Shrimp. Blue haze and Purple Haze hootchies are also pulling these tasty winter run Salmon out. Some trollers are also using herring and anchovey with good results.
Jan 25th Fishing with Bev and Bill for a short trip infront of the harbour mouth, trolling for winter Springs. Started around 11am and fished until 2:30pm, slower fishing than usual with only one fish getting on, and getting away. Cool wind blowing from the North East, slight chop but bright sunny skies. Tried a nickle and blue spoon, but had the bite on a Glo Below hootchy trolled behind a red mirror flasher at 120ft.
Jan 26th Fishing with Nick from Eagle Eye Outfitters in Sooke, we were being followed by a large hungry seal early in the morning off the Sooke Bluffs. We pulled the gear and ran 5 minutes west just past Otter Point and continued trolling our Glo Below hootchies at 105 and 120ft on the downriggers. Staying between 120 and 130ft of water we had 5 Salmon hit the gear and landed 2, many of the strikes were hard ones we’d like to have back. There was one other boat fishing near us, he had 4 Salmon on which he lost. Water was calm with a cool breeze out of the East and bright warm sunshine. Great day, good action.
Good Fishing, Ron
