Jan.22, 2009 – Fishing in Sooke has been VERY GOOD for really large Winter Springs.
Fishing in Sooke has been VERY GOOD for really large Winter Springs.
Over the last week a few customers at Eagle Eye Outfitters have reported landing Spring Salmon in the 20lb range, the stomach of one Salmon was reported full of needle fish, so squirts maybe a good lure choice.
Last Sunday Jan. 11th Mark Price landed a 13 and 26lb Spring Salmon infront of Sooke Harbour on hootchies, he was out again on Tuesday and landed 8 fish 7 to 10lbs on anchovey.
Jan 20th Fishing with my nephew Nick from Eagle Eye Outfitters in Sooke. Soon after setting the gear in 120ft of water off the Bluffs by the white house Nick had a really nice fish on but lost it before we got to see it. We were running the glow hootchies on both sides, but Nick was using a Green Haze Jelly Fish flasher by Big Shooter while I was using a mirror chrome and red flasher. The fishing seemed a bit slower, we had one other strike on my gear that landed us the only Salmon of the trip around 5lbs. Water was good early on but started to chop up late in the morning, the South East wind didn’t help, but it was sunny.
Check out Sooke’s newest Salmon Derby at www.salmonclassic.ca, coming September 3rd,4th, and 5th 2009. This is a “high stakes” Derby that is going to include deluxe accomodations, meals, moorage, large cash prizes and much more.(The timing for a big Spring Salmon could not be better)
Another Derby to take note of is the return of the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Derby to the 2009 Summer season, August 1st and 2nd. All proceeds of this very popular Salmon Derby go to the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society which operates the Jack Brooks Hatchery in Sooke, raising thousands of Spring and Coho Salmon which return to the Sooke River.
