Jan. 5, 2009 – Winter Spring Fishing Update for Sooke
Fishing in Sooke has been VERY GOOD for Winter Springs, consistant spots to try are the Sooke Harbour mouth, and the Bluffs to the Trailer Park.
The last few days have not produced a lot of the larger Springs that seemed to be around last week. The Salmon are being caught on many different types of hootchy, anchovey and spoon combinations, including Purple Haze, Glow Below, Tiger Prawn, Green Glow, Glow and Green, the Nasty Boy, Radiant’s Blue Haze spoon and Cop Car.
Best time of day, appears to be noon and the afternoon. Any hootchie with some glow properties should work well. Sooke locals Margaret and Derek reported limiting out on Winter Springs between 8 and 12lbs on the morning of Jan.3rd, infront of the Bluffs in 130ft of water using Purple Haze flashers and green glow hootchies.
Jan 1st/09 Fishing with guests from Moscow; Elana,Constan,Mikhail, and Galina infront of the Trailer Park for winter feeder Spring Salmon. Weather was good as the wind stayed down, cloud cover and a little rain did make it cool. Mikhail lost the first fish to hit the gear, but we landed two Springs and lost another to a seal. We trolled the red flashers and glow hootchies at 120ft on the downriggers in 120 to 130ft of water.Plenty of crabs in the trap, at the dock, when we got back.
Jan.2nd Fishing with John from Mayo County, Ireland. Started trolling
for Winter Springs around 1:30pm this afternoon, near the Tin Shed trolling towards the Trailer Park. Water was a bit choppy coming out of the Harbour due to the ebbing tide, but was better further west. John landed 2 of his first ever Pacific Salmon under sunny blue skies off the trailer Park, trolling red flashers and glow hootchies at 120ft on the downriggers. No other strikes to report. No seals to be seen.
Good Fishing, Ron
