Dec. 30, 2008 – Lots of Winter Springs

Fishing in Sooke has been VERY GOOD for larger Winter Springs, spots to try are the Sooke Harbour mouth, and the Bluffs to the Trailer Park.

Seals are still frequenting the Harbour mouth and changing your location is often the only way to avoid them. The Salmon are being caught on many different types of hootchy, anchovey and spoon combinations, including Purple Haze, Glow Below, Tiger Prawn, Green Glow, Glow and Green, the Nasty Boy, Radiant’s Blue Haze spoon and Cop Car.

Best time of day, today, appeared to be noon and the afternoon, I heard that the morning was slow. Any hootchie with some glow properties should work well.

Two other boats out today reported getting 7 to 10 Winter Springs on the gear and both had two fish on board the last time I spoke with them. Ocean Dreams Charters reported that thier guest Neil landed a 15lb Spring around noon, the skipper, Dave, said he was using Betsy flashers and glow hootchies.

Dec 8th Fishing today with two young ladies Kate and Marie from Australia. We started at the Harbour mouth and after a couple of hours of being followed by seals, we powered west to an area just east of Sheringham Point. We had five fish hit the gear around noon, we landed two; 12 and 4lbs, the others didn’t hook up.

We were trolling Glow Below hootchies at 120ft in 135ft of water. The sea was flat, the wind low but cool. Great day.

Dec. 28th Fishing on my own today in 2REEL2, had a late start around 10am this morning. The ride out was a bit choppy but the forecast and word from another boat already out was that it was fishable. Stopped the boat at the Trailer Park and trolled back towards the Bluffs in 120 to 130ft of water. I ran red flashers and Glow Below hootchies and had the first Spring on and in the boat within the first hour of trolling. Had 7 or 8 Salmon hit the gear, releasing 3 small ones and losing 3 or 4, one to a hungry seal.

Finally landed a sweet 12lb Spring around 3:30pm and headed in, good day, lots of action. Some choppy water and wind, but very much fishable all day long.
