Sooke ‘Sail Past’ a Success

December 22, 2008 – the First Annual Sooke Harbour Christmas Sail Past was held last night. The wind subsided long enough for the event to take place, and despite the cold and snow, there was a good turnout. The residents of Sooke proved that the weather was no match for their holiday spirit!

Seven boats took part, each uniquely decorated with strings of multi-coloured Christmas lights, illuminated snowmen and glowing stars. It was evident how time and effort everyone put in to making their boats festive and bright.

The parade route began at Sooke Harbour Marina, slowly making its way past Whiffen Spit and then circling back towards the Sooke Basin. The boats then turned back to Whiffen Spit for a final Sail Past before docking again at Sooke Harbour Marina. The boats could be seen from many viewpoints along the shoreline, but bystanders at Whiffen Spit enjoyed hot chocolate, provided by Sooke Harbour House, as they watched the brightly lit-up “floats” glide by.

We’d like to send out a big thanks to all the boats that went all out, making the Sail Past a glowing success!
