Sooke Traditional Christmas Fine Arts and Crafts Exhibition 2008

Friday, Dec.6, 2008

Local East Sooke photographer, Mary Waskul, had asked me if I wanted to pop into this exhibition tonight to see her work displayed as well as view the many other talents pieces of art that are on display in this show. I decided that since Mrs. Discover Sooke is under the weather, it would be a great opportunity to try and escape the bacteria infested house and appreciate some of Sooke and areas finest talents.

When I first heard about this exhibition in Sooke from a good friend, Margaret Templeman, Driftwood Santa Extraordinaire and artist at this exhibition, she said it was in a house. I imagined a small room with some local arts, maybe some pies or butter tarts to go along with the show and some hand knitted dog sweaters, not that there is anything wrong with that, we have a couple for our Jack Russells when the temperatures hit 0. But more of a small town craft fair with baked goods and meat draws.

But it’s not. Well, yes, it’s in a house. But it’s not what I expected, not at all. When I walked in the front door I was hit with a barrage of wonderful art and colours from many artists in the first room. Art from photographers, painters, potters, card makers and many more. I made my way into the next room of the house. More, tons more wonderful art exhibits. I asked myself, where did the home owner put all their furniture? It’s in their house, yes, but it may as well be a gallery. While you walk around you are offered a complimentary drink and baked goodies all the while listening to some good old, memory invoking Christmas tunes.

There must have been 4 rooms downstairs, neatly organized with various art pieces on tables, hung on the wall and on stands. Bedrooms are filled with various art. Along the stairwell of the house and into their living room upstairs.

This is no small art show. This is big. This could easily be a gallery shown in a home in a large urban center. The talent runs high. This is cosy and this exhibition has a great vibe and feel to it. The owners of the house, as well as some of the artists are there to talk to you. The prices are fantastic and the art even better.

Please put any notion aside of what you might expect from a home art show, as this is NOTHING what you might expect if you haven’t been. Next year I’ll be placing some of my work there, I’m sold. What a great event.

I strongly suggest you make your way to this location as it’s only on this weekend. With over 40 artists shown, you’ll find something to fall in love with.
