Dec. 4th, 2008 Large Winter Springs are here!
Fishing in Sooke continues to be GOOD for Winter Springs, The most consistant
fishing spot for the Springs seems to be off the Harbour mouth.
The Salmon are being caught on many different types of hootchy, anchovey and spoon
combinations, including Purple Haze, Glow Below, Tiger Prawn, Green Glow, Glow and
Green, the Nasty Boy, Radiant’s Blue Haze spoon and Cop Car. Nov. 27th Dillon
Yakimovich brought a nice 10lb Spring into Eagle-Eye Outfitters with his Dad, good
going Dillon.
Nov. 1st Fishing the Sooke Harbour Marina Chum Derby, with Nick and Gerrett, (the
Derby goes for 10 days). Gerrett landed a feeder Spring 7.2lbs that he weighed into
the on line Derby. We only fished for two hours, as we had other commitments.
Nov.2nd Fishing the above Chum Derby with Nick and Garrett, again we fished for two
hours and this time the guys each got a Winter Spring. We didn’t weigh the Salmon in
as they were slightly smaller than the fish we weighed in yesterday. Next time we will as there are hidden weight prizes.
Nov.24th Fishing with Nick from Eagle Eye Outfitters in Sooke. We had two good
strikes on a purple haze squirt that Nick was trolling at 105ft by the white house
on the Sooke Bluffs. Both fish spat the hooks early on in the fight.
Nov.30th Fishing with Nick again, we trolled west to the Trailer Park in the morning
and found things very slow there. We trolled back to the harbour mouth and found 15
boats in the area and probably half a dozen seals dogging them. We did manage to
land a really nice 11lb Spring on a Glow Below hootchy after losing one to a seal,
and 3 others that spat the hooks. All our hits were on the Glow Below hootchy at
120ft on the downrigger. Calm water, cloudy skies, no rain.
Dec.1st Nick and I returned to the Harbour mouth this morning to calm water and
sunny warm skies. Fishing was slow and many seals were in the area following the
boat around. We did get two fish on, both were taken by seals. We did see two Orca
whales we believed to be transient as they were not on the surface for long.
