Fall Fishing Update

Fishing in Sooke for Salmon has been great for Chums and Feeder Springs, have seen some good Coho at the dock, but not many. The most consistant fishing spots for Winter Springs seems to be off the Trailer Park or Secretary Is.

Feeder or Winter Springs are smaller than the summer run fish, but are often more plentyful. Wild Coho are now open to one fish per person in the Sooke area, and three hatchery Coho per person. Many boats are trying to fish the local spots for Halibut, and some nice fish are coming into the dock with some consistancy.

Fred Elgert in the Seacat out of Jock’s Dock landed a 78lb Halibut Oct.10th in Sooke.

Eagle Eye Outfitters has a full supply of Hali gear and maps with gps locations to try fishing for Halibut from Sooke to Port Renfrew.

Check out the ”Here Fishy Fishy Chum Derby” on through the first week in November, put on by the Sooke Harbour Marina and Resort. The prizes look pretty good. Fish can be weighed in at Sooke Harbour Marina on their computerized scale compliments of fishtactics.com. Check out the websites’ pictures of fish weighed in on the DST scale.

Oct.10th Fishing with Doug from Alberta, near the Trailer Park, on a calm sunny morning. Had to shake many small Coho and Springs off the gear. We did hook into three decent size fish, landing two Spring Salmon 7 and 10lbs. We have been trolling the Trailer Park from the Tin Shed to Otter Point in 120 to 150ft of water with the gear anywhere from 95 to 135ft on the downrigger.

Oct.11th Fishing with Ed and Leila from East Sooke, from first thing until noon. We had one good fish hit the gear, and Ed played a nice 8 or 9lb Spring Salmon to the net. Lots of small shaker Salmon hitting the gear, good sign for future Salmon fishing in our area. Calm and sunny weather, starting to cool off.

Oct 12th Fishing with Stacy, his son Nick and Garrett trolling anchovey and glow hootchy off the Trailer Park. Calm sunny morning, we had 5 or 6 good fish hit the gear, many hits popping the pin on the downrigger. Gerrit landed his first Pacific Salmon, an 8lb Chum. Nick also landed one of his biggest fish an 11lb Chum Salmon. We released many shaker ( under sized ) Salmon, and one small Spring that was legal but too small. Great morning for action.

Good Fishing, Ron
